Broken / Lost Retainers

Blandy House

About This Condition

Retainers are used to maintain your smile after the teeth have been aligned with orthodontics. If you lose or break your retainers, it is important you book an appointment to address this as the teeth are at risk of moving out of alignment.

We offer several different types of retainers to suit your lifestyle including bonded retainers and removable retainers.

Removable Retainers

These are bespoke clear aligners that fit gently over your teeth to maintain the correct alignment of your newly straightened teeth. Your orthodontist will recommend how you should wear your retainers to avoid any relapse.

Do not eat or drink with your retainer in place and clean them regularly with a toothbrush and lukewarm water. Use a retainer cleaning product such as ‘Retainer Brite’ and avoid bleach as this can discolour and damage your retainers.

Fixed / Bonded Retainers

Bonded retainers are wires that are fitted behind the teeth. As they are permanently attached, you will need keep them extra clean. It is best to avoid very hard or sticky foods. If your wire breaks, it is best to wear your removable retainer full time until you have the bonded wire replaced at the clinic.

Retainers can be expensive so it is best to take extra care of them and keep them in a dedicated retainer box when they are not being worn.

Remember to bring your retainers to all your review appointments with your orthodontist so they can check the fit.
